FOUR men are facing long prison sentences today after they were convicted of the brutal, horrific attempted murder of a Teesside dad.
Brian Robert Letchford, Andrew and Mark Daniels and Kevin Ernest Dawson were all found guilty of two charges of attempted murder last night.
Jurors decided the men all tried to kill engineer Kevin Harland in a vicious, two-pronged attack, mowing him down with a car then stabbing him.
The jury reached unanimous verdicts after just over five hours' consideration, following a four-week trial.
Some of the men could face indefinite prison sentences for public protection, akin to life. They showed little reaction to the jury's decisions. Ex-boxer Mr Harland, 46, came to Teesside Crown Court to hear the verdicts .
classic tall ugg boots His left leg was crushed in the car crash outside his sister's home on Leighton Road, Grangetown, between 12.30am and 1am on July 4 last year. Surgeons had to amputate the leg below the knee, and fought for hours to save his right leg, which had been stabbed. Mr Harland is in a wheelchair. The Crown said the four were "a vicious, callous pack who have tried to kill somebody who had perhaps the temerity to stand up to them".
Prosecutor Sarah Mallett said they set up an ambush and "hunted down" Mr Harland in a co-ordinated attack. Taxi driver Letchford, 36, twice drove his Skoda Octavia cab at Mr Harland on Birchington Avenue, missing by "inches" as he jumped on a garden wall. His friend Dawson, 33, was the front seat passenger. Mr Harland ran for his life onto Leighton Road, but this time the taxi struck him and pinned him to a gate and brick pillar. As the car reversed off, Letchford's half-brothers Andrew Anthony Daniels, 34, and Mark Alec Daniels, 32, moved in on foot, armed. And as Mr Harland lay defenceless and bleeding with terrible leg injuries in his sister's garden, Andrew Daniels chopped at his right leg Giverchy Bags with a sword or similar weapon. He caused a wound which severed the main artery. Mr Harland remembered being hit "full force" by the car and nearly passed out from the shock. He described his ordeal as "like a slow motion movie". He said he saw Andrew Daniels standing over him saying: "
This is the way to do it. We've got to do this." Mr Harland was left for dead and might not have survived his appalling injuries if it weren't for the quick help of neighbours, who put tourniquets on his legs, and medical staff. He said he pleaded: "Don't let me die." He remembered little else of the events, described by one eyewitness as "a blinding moment of horror". The motives, reasons and background for the murderous attack still remain unclear. Mr Harland had been seen to swing an axe at the car on Birchington Avenue. He was earlier heard saying: "Mark I'm here. If you want us, come and get us. If you're going to kill us then come and kill us." The four assailants fled after the assault, hiding the car. Letchford handed himself in to the police hours after the crash while the Daniels brothers lay low and were arrested later. Samurai swords were previously found at the homes of both Daniels brothers, who both had convictions for violence including a nine-year robbery term for Mark. Letchford and Dawson, both of Lanchester Road, Ulysse Nardin Watch and the Daniels brothers, both of Bolckow Road, all Grangetown, denied the charges. Judge Peter Bowers said he wanted to think about the sentences and adjourned the case for around three weeks for reports to be prepared. He thanked the jury. The four men were remanded in
