Rock's men deserve the braggin

2010年4月21日

Byline: Nick Purewal

Blaydon 13 Tynedale 11 SOMETIMES you are better off without the ball, and so it proved for Blaydon in sodden second-half Crow Trees conditions yesterday.

As the rain teemed down and the pitch sludged to slime, the Swalwell men rightly realised the route to victory was to kick absolutely everything in behind Tynedale.

Bidding for a National One double over their fierce rivals, Blaydon hardly ventured out of their own half after the turnaround - but Tom Rock's charges will not care one bit, especially given that was clearly the right strategy. As much clinging on as defending resolutely, Blaydon shut out the Corbridge men thanks to dogged legwork from the pack - and a little bit of luck as the mistakes increased as time wore on.

Gavin Beasley had one tough penalty shot to nudge Tynedale into a second-half lead, but the former Falcon could not squeeze it over from wide out to the left.

Decent enough discipline after the break did the job for Blaydon then, when all the action and the points had fallen before the interval.

"It's massive for us to secure such a rare thing as links of london a double over Tynedale and we definitely deserved it overall," said delighted Blaydon skipper Matt Hall.

"We conceded a lot of penalties in the first half and that really killed us, so there was always the worry that might cost us in the end.

"But we played the conditions well, kept our nerve in horrible weather and it's a great feeling to have beaten Tynedale twice this season.

"We hardly got out of our half in the second half, but we battled well, managed to defend pretty solidly and played the right tactics at the right times in putting the ball in behind them as often as possible."

Adam Armstrong and Beasley traded penalties to open the scoring, before Beasley posted a second goal.

Early Prada Replica Handbags Blaydon transgressions saw Kerry Wood take the sin-bin fall shortly afterwards to leave the home side staring down a tight 10-minute stretch one man light.

But with just 14 men Blaydon stole in for a well-worked try through rugby director and scrum-half Tom Rock.

Juggernaut centre James Fitzpatrick careered through the midfield on a suicide line, taking a timely pass from Andrew Baggett to power close, before finding Rock on a neat cutback that took the boss under the posts.

Winger Armstrong landed the extras to leave Blaydon in charge, but only just - and it did not take Tynedale long to reply.

Lock Andrew Murray edged over after a series of pick-and-go drives to hand the visitors a one-point lead in a very even contest where both sides showed excellent ambition.

But Armstrong landed one from three further penalty attempts in the half when Matt Hall got his hands on the ball at the ruck to force Tynedale into not releasing.

Jamie Murray was sin-binned before the break to compound Tynedale's troubles, in another derby contest where Tom Borthwick's men simply froze.

Just as back in October when Blaydon robbed Tynedale 28-22 in their own backyard, so yesterday at Crow Trees the more consistent of the two North East National One sides simply failed to turn it on.

Tynedale had stacks of second-half possession and a
