Wimbledon poet Matt tells all

2010年7月14日

TOTNES' home grown, tennis playing poet laureate has been waxing lyrical about Wimbledon -- from the job of the ball boys to the longest game in tennis history.

And in between he managed to have himself smuggled onto the centre court to watch Andy Murray power his way to victory and Venus Williams crash to defeat.

So far the comedian and poet has penned 18 poems as the first official Wimbledon poet laureate. He has recited his tennis poetry over the radio and the TV and even treated the queue in the line up for tickets to a reading. "They seemed quite pleased to have something a bit novel to listen to while they were waiting," said Matt "It went down surprisingly well. They were very generous. Anyway I told them that if they tried to get away they would lose their place in the queue."

Matt was chosen to become the first Wimbledon Championship's Poet to capture the flavour and fervour of what is the world's leading tennis tournament. His poems are viewable on-line and he has produced podcasts of his tennis work via the Wimbledon and Poetry Trust websites.

His remit was to produce poems about the background events at the huge event rather than concentrating on the top players. And he has met the head groundsman and been on training sessions with the ball boys and girls to get a feel for their work. He has produced poems about the strawberries and cream crowds, about the ball boys, about the pressure players are under and one about tennis generally called 'Thwock'.

But he could not ignore the marathon clash between Isner and Mahut which lasted 11 hours and five minutes spread over three days, which Isner won by 70 games to 68 in the last set. "I was watching it from the roof of the broadcasting centre. I am writing mainly about the background and not about the unfolding drama but there was huge pressure to come up with something for that epic game," said Matt.

"I thought that the longest match ever deserved the shortest poem so I wrote a little Haiku."

He said he had invited poetrywriting tennis fan to pen their own haiku about the event -- and has been deluged by 250 so far. A keen park tennis player, Matt plays regularly and explained: "I don't follow the tournaments but what I always do is sit in front of the television during Wimbledon. I get completely gripped." He said that his 'minder' at Wimbledon had managed to smuggle him into the competitors' section on court one, a perk for the staff if there is space.

"I watched a bit of Federer's first game and Andy Murray's second and I watched Venus Williams before she went out. I am enjoying myself. It is a real treat to be able to wander around the courts. It makes it extra special to be watching Andy Murray blasting balls. It's different to watching it on TV. It is the velocity and the ferocity of the whole thing." Matt will be staying for the finals before heading home on Monday But he has little or no hope that anyone will be able to smuggle him in for the championship clashes.

"I am certain that the ear that was whispered in before will be closed to those kind of pleas," he said. "I will be watching the final on Henman Hill or Murray's Mountain."

Wimbledon intruders foil secur

2010年7月14日

INTRUDERS managed to get into the All England Club ahead of the Queen's first visit to the Wimbledon championships in 33 years, it was revealed today.

A "number of people" gained access to the site before being caught and removed.

The breach came despite a security clampdown ahead of the Queen's arrival in SW19 today.

Police said the incident, which occurred just over three weeks ago, would form part of their "intelligence" in helping to make the championships secure.

After the trespassers got on to the site, security levels were heightened at the club, with extra bag searches and staff told to be "extra vigilant".

A Scotland Yard source told the Standard: "Some people got in and they should not have done. They didn't get very far and were turned away.

"We don't know who they were or what they wanted. This could have been serious. It formed part of our intelligence for the securing of the event."

A source at the All England Club confirmed the breach, saying "a security guard let them in and should not have done.

"They were on CCTV the whole time. They were asked to leave and they did."

A spokesman for Wimbledon said police were not called at the time but were informed later and details of the intruders were passed on. He said: "It was a security irregularity."

Rainbows Children's Hospice helps thousands of youngsters with lifethreatening conditions and disabilities from across the region. This Christmas, the replica breitling watches centre is appealing for help to raise the final Pounds 500,000 for a planned Pounds 4m expansion to its accommodation and training rooms. In the first of a series of pieces, reporter Chris Jones speaks to a family that have benefited from the charity's work.

BORN more than three months prematurely and weighing barely as much as a bag of sugar, tiny Niamh Allen faced a long fight to survive.

For nearly a year, her parents took it in turns to stay at their daughter's hospital bedside, desperately hoping she would pull through.

The infant had been born 14 weeks early and weighed only 1lb 10oz.

Her premature birth meant her airways were seriously under- developed and she could not breathe on her own.

Dad Peter, 43, said that at times it was "touch and go" as to whether baby Niamh would survive.

He said: "It was the most terrifying time of my life. We felt so helpless because there was really nothing we could do."

Her twin sister, Finola, had also been born prematurely but, amazingly, showed no real problems as she developed.

Mr Allen said: "They were both born with severe brain trauma. But while Niamh could not breathe on her own, Finola seemed to manage."

Astonishingly, Niamh grew stronger and now, eight years later, she is fit, healthy and as active as any other eight-yearold.

Her parents say Rainbows Children's Hospice played a vital part in her recovery.

The turning point came almost a year after Niamh's birth, according to Mr Allen.

"My wife, Eithne, spent most of that year in the hospital, as did I. Every day was a constant worry.

"Our son, Louis, who was three, was there a lot, too. He ended up knowing more medical words than any other three-year-old I've known.

"For 10 months, doctors had not been sure what to do about Niamh's condition. Then a specialist professor suggested a tracheotomy."

The operation plants a tube in the windpipe to help with breathing. Once Niamh had undergone this, her condition started to improve.

Finally, the family, who live in Leicester, were able to bring Niamh home - but the problems did not end there.

The couple had to give their daughter almost constant attention and use medical equipment provided by the hospital - all the while with two other young children to look after.

An oxygen tank was fitted in the garage and there were tubes all round the house, so Niamh could be hooked up to breathing apparatus in every room. She had a small portable oxygen cylinder for when the family went out.

Her parents were medically trained to use all the equipment, including a suction machine to keep the tube in Niamh's throat clean.

Mr Allen said: "She needed the tube to stay alive, so we had an alarm at night, which would sound if it became loose while she was sleeping.

"We were living on a knifeedge."

It was at this point the family discovered Rainbows Children's Hospice. Mr Allen, head of marketing at the University of Derby, sa

Dial M for men [Chandigarh]

2010年5月10日

CHANDIGARH: Eighteen-year-old Sandeep's first brush with the fast-emerging world of gigolos was stoked by an 'innocent' desire to earn a quick buck. While surfing the internet one day, the teenager came across an advertisement by a city club, inviting ''young and good-looking boys'' to provide the services of a masseur in exchange for a pocketful of currency.

When Sandeep phoned the number provided in the ad, he was asked to deposit Rs 5,000 security. He was later called for a party on sexy lingerie china Chandigarh's outskirts, his entry into the 'tabooed' zone.

Sandeep now belongs to an ever-increasing tribe of youngsters who're glad that sex sells. Sources say money is a huge pull. ''They get anything from Rs 1,500 to Rs 10,000 for each escapade. Apart from slums and middle-classes, there are some gigolos even from the city's elite families,'' they add.

For Panchkula-based student, Naman, the initial hesitation to enter the forbidden territory succumbed in the face of money offered. ''I belong to a Punjabi middle-class family and stay as a paying guest here. I was scared at first. But the romps add an exciting dose of adventure in my life,'' he says. Internet is not the only place where these professionals hook up. ''The modus operandi involves calling the male sex workers and their clients at a place decided in advance. The hotspots are Rose Garden, Sukhna Lake, upmarket gymnasiums and multiplexes situated in Industrial Area and Manimajra,'' the sources shared.

''There are different rules for newbies and veterans. The young boys are mostly asked to stand with a rose in the hand or wear a particular colour shirt so that the clients can identify them,'' says the manager of a club that runs the service.

Email and phonecalls are not only placed to recruit, but also to get more business. Sneha, a young working woman from the city, was recently approached over chat by a lady who wanted to know if she would like to attend a ''gig'' party. ''I though she meant a dance do or something. She tried to convince me by saying her club has branches all across the country and would soon be opening up a franchise in the city,'' says Sneha. Responding to TOI, SP (crime, Clip on charms city & vigilance) Madhur Verma said, "As of now, we have no knowledge about such parties or gigolos operating in city. But if we get any complaint, we will take immediate action against such persons." (Names have been changed to protect identity) For Reprint Rights: timescontent.com

Dewey is ready to fulfil his p

2010年5月10日

Byline: David Barnes

THERE was a time when it seemed as if Rob Dewey couldn't put a foot wrong on a rugby pitch. At the start of the 2005-06 season, the powerful centre scored four tries for Edinburgh in his first five games as a professional player, and established himself as the longawaited solution to Scotland's midfield crisis.

Although the start of his international career was postponed for a year by a couple of shoulder injuries, he then made an immediate impact when he did eventually pull on the navy blue jersey by scoring three tries in his first four matches at that level.

By the time the 2007 Rugby World Cup came along, he was 23 years old and firmly established as his country's most lethal attacking weapon. Sadly, such a charmed existence doesn't tend to last long in Scottish rugby and, because of the spectacular nature of his early success, Dewey's fall from grace was particularly dramatic.

replica tag heruer watches

He played every game in the World Cup, scoring a try in his team's curtain-raiser against Portugal, before joining up with his new club Ulster in November 2007. He was one of a number of players who decided to leave the capital that summer, as a bitter power struggle between the SRU and Bob Carruthers, who franchised the pro-team at that time, raged out of control.

Cutting the apron-strings has worked wonders for some of those players. For Dewey, it was an unmitigated disaster.

links of london charms

'I went over there (to Ulster) with a cartilage injury in my knee, which I had picked up in the first game of the World Cup, and that was always hanging over me,' he explained. 'Because I was so keen to impress, I didn't really tell anyone about it and, as a result, it took a long time to get sorted. It got to the stage that I was playing games and I couldn't sprint flat out. That's when I finally knew it needed sorted.

'The rehab was fairly long, it took three or four months, so that was effectively my season over.' By the time Dewey was fit again, Mark McCall, the coach who had brought him to Belfast, had been replaced by Matt Williams -- a man who needs no introduction to Scottish rugby fans -- and Dewey's face clearly didn't fit anymore.

This summer, Dewey was thrown a lifeline by Glasgow coach Sean Lineen -- and he is determined to make the most of the opportunity. Two years older and significantly wiser, he is happy to accept selection on the wing as part of a rehabilitation process which he knows will be far more pedestrian than his original rise to prominence.

'I'm not going to lie, I would still love to be in the centre, but right now it is just a case of getting game time under my belt, so whether I'm on the wing or at centre, I'm just happy to be out there,' he said.

'It's a new thing to learn but I feel I'm picking it up quickly. We're trying to play a quicktempo game, so hopefully that will give me plenty of chances to get the ball in a bit of space.' The Warriors welcome the Scarlets to Firhill this afternoon, bringing a familiar face in former fans' favourite Sean Lamont with them.

You don't have to look far for comparisons between Lamont and Dewey. Big, fast and uncomplicated, they will each view this season as a chance to reassert their international credentials after two disappointing years in which their stock has fallen.

'It is going to be a real battle,' said Dewey. 'Sean Lamont has been putting in a lot of big hits and has scored a couple of tries, so http://www.yesblog.ru/blog.php?user=mywatches¬e=17939
